Photo blog: Dia de Muertos in Oaxaca City

Dia de Muertos in Chichicapam was strikingly different to the celebrations that take place in Oaxaca Historic Center. Here there are parades everyday of the 3-5 day holiday, elaborate alters, brilliant sand paintings, and even Halloween costumes. It is a truly over-the-top affair. Alcalá street (the main street to explore galleries and shops on foot) was packed solid with tourists, vendors, and parades. After enjoying it at a more leisurely tempo for the three previous weeks, I was keen to keep my distance. However, and exploration of the neighborhood revealed some great art, and of course, the usual barrage of fireworks, dancing ladies, and calenda figures.
Below are photos from Oaxaca City of this colorful festival.
